Why did I stop hosting my own server? Cost. If you're going to host your own #Mastodon server, you need hosting. I tried to figure out how people host it themselves at home (like off a NAS), but I'm not that smart. 馃榿 So I had to pay for hosting. I was paying 拢9 a month, but my database grew to a point I needed to go up to the next plan and sorry, 拢19 a month for hosting just isn't feasible for me.
The other reason I stopped hosting my own instance is the reach of a single instance. If I understand it correctly #Mastodon relays connect you to other instances. If you connect to larger relays it takes up more server resources.
I did move over to #microblog since my blog is hosted over there. You can follow and read people's posts there. It's very good, but it's not a one to one replacement for #Mastodon You can't like or boost posts. So... with all that said, I'm back to where it all started.
