The other reason I stopped hosting my own instance is the reach of a single instance. If I understand it correctly #Mastodon relays connect you to other instances. If you connect to larger relays it takes up more server resources.
I did move over to #microblog since my blog is hosted over there. You can follow and read people's posts there. It's very good, but it's not a one to one replacement for #Mastodon You can't like or boost posts. So... with all that said, I'm back to where it all started.
